Genealogy Abraham to Christ
His Royal Lineage
Matthew 1:1-17
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham, Father of Israel — the promised nation
- Abraham
- Isaac
- Jacob
- Judah and his brothers
- Pharez and Zerah of Tamar
- Hezron
- Aram
- Amminadab
- Nahshon
- Salmon
- Boaz of Rahab — Boaz marries Ruth, a Moabitess, tenth generation from Abraham and his brother-in-law/nephew Lot who had fathered Moab unknowingly through his daughter. Note the prohibition in Deuteronomy 23:2-3
- Obed of Ruth
- Jesse
- David the king
Solomon, King of Israel — the visible nation
- Solomon of her who had been the wife of Uriah — Bathsheba's name is not mentioned here
- Rehoboam
- Abijah
- Asa
- Jehoshaphat
- Jehoram, whom Jehoshaphat causes to marry Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel — his son Ahaziah, grandson Joash and great-grandson Amaziah apparently have ungodly ends, distant from God, and are neither mentioned nor counted in this genealogy
- Uzziah
- Jotham
- Ahaz
- Hezekiah
- Manasseh
- Amon
- Josiah
- Jehoiachin — strictly speaking he was Josiah's grandson, but Josiah's son Jehoiakim has no mention — it was the time Israel was captured and taken to the kingdom of Babylon — Jehoiakim's younger brother Jehoahaz who took the throne in Israel died in captivity in Egypt — Jehoiakim died in Jerusalem — then Jehoiakim's son Jehoiachin and his brothers are taken prisoners into Babylon
And after the Jews were brought to Babylon we next see
Jehoiachin, King of Israel (in captivity but also renewed, born again) — the somewhat invisible nation
- Jehoiachin — with renewal coming at the end of the 37th year of his captivity — see 2 Kings 25:27-30
- Shealtiel, his heir (see note above)
- Zerubbabel, Shealtiel's nephew
- Abiud
- Eliakim
- Azor
- Sadoc
- Achim
- Eliud
- Eleazar
- Matthan
- Jacob
- Joseph the husband of Mary
- Jesus, his adopted son, who is called Christ.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations
