Logan was declared to be a new city in 1981, basing its administration on Wembley Road in Woodridge.
Some History
Woodridge was a settlement in Tingalpa shire just outside Brisbane. In 1949 it had been amalgamated into a new shire, called Albert, based around Beenleigh in the south that also included the Gold Coast hinterland. Albert's total population was just 7,261 covering 1,323 square kilometres (by air about 70kms x 19kms). However Woodridge and its surrounding area saw major development, especially after reticulated water was connected in 1963, and attracted a large number of migrant and poorer families through the assistance of the state housing commission. In 1978 Logan Shire was created, separating itself from Albert (& other) shires. In 1981 Logan Shire became Logan City. Since 1981 Logan has grown from 82,000 to 300,000 residents.
Situated between the City of Brisbane to the north and the City of Gold Coast to the south, the City also borders the Scenic Rim Region in the south west (Beaudesert), the City of Ipswich in the west, and Redland City in the east. It is divided into 70 suburbs and 12 divisions, for which a councillor is elected to each of the latter. Note, half the suburbs have less than 3500 residents, many have less than 500 residents.

Its other populous suburbs include Beenleigh in the south, where they grew sugar cane and cotton in the 1800s, a struggle, and opened a rum distillery in 1884. Note, from 1949, Beenleigh as previously mentioned was the centre of Albert Shire, along with the surrounding suburbs of Eagleby, Mt Warren Park, Windaroo, Edens Landing and Holmview. In 1978 they became the northern area of a much diminished Albert Shire — with the separation of Logan its population had shrunk from 72,000 in 1976 to 18,000. But the Gold Coast Hinterland now exploded in size and in 1991 the shire's population was right up to 144,000. In 1995 Albert Shire was dissolved and Beenleigh and those northern suburbs were amalgamated, along with the Gold Coast hinterland, into Gold Coast City. In 2008 Beenleigh and those suburbs were transferred from Gold Coast City to Logan City (despite protests from locals, who voted against being part of Logan).
Logan City's main rural towns are Jimboomba and Logan Village. Logan City does have the dubious reputation of being Queensland's poker machine capital with over 2,000 machines in 41 registered sites.
