Leigh Nash described (in August 1999) the origin of the band's name on the Late Show with David Letterman: "It comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity. A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence-a very small amount of English currency-to go and get a gift for his father. The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction." (CS Lewis's exact quote "It is all very nice and proper, but only an idiot would think that the father is sixpence to the good on the transaction.") "C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve Him the way we should, we should do it humbly, with humble hearts-realizing how we got the gifts in the first place." Hmm, yes, partnering with God, and let's see if with humble hearts, with faith in him, that sixpence can grow :-) |
"Kiss Me" - Sixpence None the Richer (1998) Kiss me out of the bearded barley Nightly, beside the green, green grass Swing, swing, swing the spinning step You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress. Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight Lead me out on the moonlit floor Lift your open hand Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance Silver moon's sparkling So kiss me. Kiss me down by the broken tree house Swing me upon it's hanging tire Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat We'll take the trail marked on your father's map Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight Lead me out on the moonlit floor Lift your open hand Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance Silver moon's sparkling So kiss me Kiss me beneath the milky twilight Lead me out on the moonlit floor Lift your open hand Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance Silver moon's sparkling So kiss me So kiss me...(2x more) ** End of lyrics |
